The Origin of International Women's Day

International Women's Day has been observed for over a century, with its roots tracing back to the early 1900s labor movements in North America and Europe . The idea of establishing an annual day to celebrate women's rights was first proposed by German activist Clara Zetkin at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen in 1910 . The date of March 8th became officially recognized following women's protests during the Russian Revolution in 1917, when women marched for "bread and peace" . The United Nations formally adopted International Women's Day in 1977, inviting all member states to proclaim March 8th as the UN Day for women's rights and world peace . Today, it is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women .
